Back at the Iceberg Lounge
The C.E.O. of KORD Industries has been making an effort to be more sociable, and so it comes to pass that Ted Kord is once more at Gotham's famed Iceberg Lounge. Nonalcoholic drinks and a lean cut of beef are on the menu, as well as some light conversation amongst Gotham's social set.

He tips the maitre'd to arrange for one of the nicer tables, with a view of most of the room, and shakes a few hands as he makes his way over - some familiar faces from charity galas.

"I should bring Tora and Bea here.."

Ted raises his eyebrows, recognizing the fellow from the previous visit.

"Anatoli, wasn't it? Nice to see you again. Just visiting Gotham for the Iceberg Lounge, or do you have other business?"

He nods, gesturing to a seat opposite him as Anatoli sits, and answers.

"I'm a resident of Gotham - for a few years now. Before that, Chicago and New York. So, I don't have to go out of my way to get here. Though, I like this place well enough that I would probably do so, even if I did go out of my way.."

Ted shrugs, leaning back in his chair a little as he sips his glass of water.

"Not near enough, I'm afraid. I'm an inventor by trade, but during the day I don a mask and battle the forces of corporate America as the founder and C.E.O. of Kord Technologies. It pays the bills.."

"Well, I imagine a lot needs removing, even when times are tough."

Ted glances around the Iceberg Lounge, smiling distractedly as he does so.

"You know what I like about this place, Anatoli?"

He chuckles, shaking his head.

"Yes and no. Yes, the Penguin was a major Gotham bad guy - doing robberies, carrying on his bizarre bird-themed crimes. But that's not the reason I like this place so much. I like it because it represents a measure of hope."

Ted goes on, explaining.

"If a guy like the Penguin can reform, in Gotham City, and become a respectable business owner, that's a very good thing. Means the people like Superman and the Justice League are right to use restraint in apprehending criminals - because there's always a chance they'll go straight."

"All they need is the right opportunity, and the ability to recognize it. Oswald Cobblepot decided to capitalize on his reputation and sense of style. James Jesse was once a regular opponent of the Flash - now he's a federal agent. Paul Booker, Major Disaster, joined the Justice League."

Ted nods, finishing his glass of water and signaling to the waiter for a refill.

"I don't believe in irredeemable human beings. There's always a way out."

Something finally clicks for Ted - his acquaintance's accent, the name, the prosthetic arm, the topics under discussion.

Oh, my God. This is the K.G. Beast.

He hesitates for a moment, but the flicker of recognition in his eyes should go unnoticed, thanks to the timely arrival of the waiter to refill his waterglass. Ted nods his thanks to the server - for a couple of reasons - then picks back up into the conversation.

"You're talking about a.. hitman? An assassin?"

Ted, now that he's recovered, isn't letting the subject be changed quite so easily.

"I suppose the first step for a professional hitman would be to stop killing. Change his patterns. There are similar jobs that are honorable and pay well - bounty hunters, for instance, or bodyguards."

He smiles.

"Let me tell you something, Anatoli. Everybody's an inventor. Not all inventions are shiny gadgets, you know. Ever think about taking up a creative hobby?"

"Habits were made to be broken. Still, maybe the bodyguard option would be a better bet, using some of your free time to expand on that mechanical knowledge. What kind of mechanics experience do you have?"

"Did.. did you just ask me if I was Batman?"

Ted really doesn't want to laugh. He really, really doesn't want to laugh. But it's a visible effort for him to keep a straight face at this point.

He holds up a single finger, in the universal gesture for 'hold on a second', as he battles to compose himself.

Finally, he manages to regain control with a little snort of suppressed laughter. He wipes a tear of mirth from his eye.

"No, I'm not Batman. My company does business with the Justice League, though - I've met most of them. And knowing myself, and having met Batman.. yeah, that's pretty funny."

It's the truth, with a few details omitted.

"I'd be willing to consider arranging a security-related position for you, to be honest - though we'd have to make arrangements to take care of any outstanding legal problems. I have a lot of discretion at the company, but I still am subject to the Board of Directors."

He's mulling that over as he sips his water.

Ted reaches out to shake the man's hand firmly, grinning.

"I'll see what I can do about your record. I know a guy who knows a big, angry lady who heads up Task Force X.."

He'll have to call Max, which is usually unpleasant, but if Max can persuade Waller to subcontract a pardon under the Task Force X authority to Kord Industries..

"It's so crazy, it just might work."
