On the Move
The key to guerrilla warfare was mobility, a small unit size, tactical target selection and of course intelligence.

Mobility they had easily. Most of the team moved like wraiths in the darkened city and one could fly. Their small numbers made it easy to slip past eyes unseen and the notice of non-organic surveillance. The array of tactical backgrounds (given that half of them were trained assassins) in the unit offered considerable wisdom in selecting the right targets. Superboy's enhanced senses and aerial recon provided information that further informed their tactics.

The point was to weaken the enemy's strength, not engage in head on conflicts with superior forces. This point in particular was the issue at had at the moment.

"Ok Dessad is out as a target" Robin concludes after hearing Kon's intel.

"Ya think? I mean he's only surrounded by an army of drones while old rockface watches the show."

The sarcasm is heavy.
Watching Dessad play Caligula with hordes of mindless slaves in Gotham Square, with Darkseid silently watching from his throne in the centre of it all was not a memory Kon was going to relish.

"Well I'm not up for any suicide missions yet. What about the the crew you saw earlier?"

"What, the guys doing random graffiti?
Not really high on the list of bad stuff happening in Gotham is it?"
tim_drake_robin From: tim_drake_robin Date: November 5th, 2010 09:22 pm (UTC) (Link)

"I don't think it's random.

From everything I've heard, it sounds like this Anti-Life thing is being spread via information. Sort of a conceptual virus.

It might be possible to be exposed to it just by reading it.

That 'graffiti' could be serious."

"Hey that's ok.
'Me Not Read So Good'"

The imitation of Bizarro is pretty good, even if it missed the nuances of the creatures contradictory mode of speech.

"I'm serious.
If you think you see any kind of graffiti more complicated than a simple tag, don't look at it.

If you can, deface it, but absolutely don't read it."

Checking his six again, a habit he's maintained ever since they arrived in Gotham, Robin continues.

"We need to take down the ones painting the message before they spread it any further though."

Robin looks to the most acclaimed contract assassin in the group.
"Shiva? Any suggestions on a plan of attack?"

"If I may interject a moment." Ridiculously quiet for a man his size, the group turns to the returning Bane. Behind him is a smaller, pale grey man. Cicada, not having Bane's stamina, was huffing and puffing. "We were on our way to look for you when we caught a glimpse of a large group of these graffiti artists. From a distance I used my reconnisance camera to take a picture of the man leading them."

Bane hands Robin a photo of a blond-haired, human looking man, wearing a multi-colored outfit: red cape, white shirt, brown pants, purple shoes.

"I recognize him from Waller's files on Darkseid's Elite. He's called Glorious Godfrey."

Looking over Robin's shoulder,
"Wow and I thought my first costume was loud."

Leading a party of mind-controlled Gotham civilians including a doped up Harvey Bullock, Godfrey makes his way through every street of the city. That's right, every street. Darkseid has tasked him with plastering every surface with his anti-life message, and the job is wearing down even the mentally subdued slaves.

"Work! Work! Work for Darkseid! Paint his message across the walls, and p-raise him! P-raise his name!!" Godfrey talks through clenched teeth. He doesn't have the conviction to his words that he normally carries.

A can of red paint explodes across the most recent message. The scarlet spatters everything and everyone in a twenty foot radius.

"Boo-Ya!" crows Superboy, borrowing the battle cry of a close friend.

Hovering high above, the Boy of Steel is carrying a makeshift bandoleer of paint cans liberated from a nearby hardware store. Robin said to mess up the wacky psychic graffiti without reading it.

This seemed like the way to do it.

At the same time a brace of Robin-styled batarangs, or 'bird-arangs' as some call them, come whizzing out of the shadows striking Godfrey in the back of the head.

"NOW!"

Richard Dragon descends amongst the mind-controlled throng - with his arsenal of non-lethal pressure-point attacks, this is the best place for him to strike at the moment, disabling civilians without lasting harm, before they can rally to Godfrey's defense.

Bane enters the fray, utilizes as many knockout blows as possible to avoid prolonged fighting that would only harm the civilians. He may not share the same honor system as the Batman, but he had his own code of ethics he would not stray from. He kept looking around, a paranoid part of his mind, thinking this was going too well.

Cicada wasn't as useful as the others in straight-up combat, rather he picked his spots. A man with a gun tries to shoot Robin, Cicada comes from behind and drains enough life to drop the man unconscious. A woman with a machete attempts to stab Bane in the back, Cicada repeats the process. Still, it was nothing compared to the euphoria he possessed when he drained Lashina. He wanted more, and he saw his chance, sneaking up behind Glorious Godfrey, intending to drain him dry.

"Death for Darkseid." Out of nowhere a controlled Harvey Bullock is behind Cicada with revolver in hand. He pulls the trigger.

Godfrey screams as the weapons strike him in the back of the head, and his voice carries with a piercing pitch. "You will all de-sist and kneel before me, fragile mortals! Kneel before my holy pow-ah!"

Where once Godfrey's words may have forced such a reaction, know there's only the slight twinge of a feeling of control. It's as if his powers have lessened. "P-raise me and kneel! Surrender and feel my joyous mercy!"

Cicada turns at hearing the voice, but the bullet goes right into Cicada eye, his glasses utterly destroyed, penetrating into his skull. Cicada falls to the ground. When the lightning hit him it granted him the gift of immortality by draining the lifeforce of others. So while the bullet didn't kill him, it still hurt like hell and the damage was severe. It would take some time for him to regenerate. He was out of the fight.

Flying high over the city, Scarab surveys the damage, shaking his head in disbelief. Fires everywhere, strange structures being erected towards the center of the city, zombified hordes swarming through the feet like so many angry insects. All the radio and TV signals were giving the same message. Some sort of math problem, the instant the first few syllables were uttered, the suit shut down the recievers, blurting out, "DANGER: OMEGA-PLUS LEVEL THREAT! MALEDIETIES DETECTED, ANTI-LIFE DETECTED! TURN BACK, RETREAT!"

That was all the suit said, and it said it over and over. Scarab stopped, looking down on the city from above, the chorus of warnings blaring in his ears. This place looked like hell on Earth, and the Evil New Gods were here according to the suit. This was too big, too much for him. This was a job for the big-name heroes, the Justice League for Christ's sake! Not some small-hero from El Paso ...

For a moment, he was about to turn back, but then, a steeled resolve entered his eyes. He wasn't just a small town hero. He'd fought alongside Batman, fought (narrowly survived) against Green Lantern. Jaime worked to convince himself he was a true hero, that this was his ultimate proving ground. He turned off the suits warnings, and began scanning the city, searching for any heroes he could help, or civilians he could save. "SEVERAL LIFE FORMS DETECTED: MULTIPLE HUMANS, ONE HUMAN/KRYPTONIAN HYBRID" The suit flashed across the screen in the same annoying alien text. "Human/Kryptonian hybrid? Superboy?" Scarab wondered aloud. He was pretty sure Superboy said something like that on the interviews he used to give on WGBS. Jaime banked down, flying toward the highlighted figures of potential allies.

As he flew over the street they were on, he got a good look at the assembled group. Superboy, Robin, some old guy (Cicada), A mexican wrestler (Bane), someone who looked like Chuck Norris (Richard Dragon), a rather beautiful asian chica (Lady Shiva), and some guy in a trenchcoat and fedora. He landed near them saying, "Uh, hi ... I'm Scarab." He said a little nervously. He wanted to make a good impression, because he really wanted to get asked to join the Teen Titans.

"You've certainly picked an auspicious time to visit Gotham, joven." Bane said casually, not seemingly affected by the sudden arrival of a man in a flying metal suit. "Scarab? You work with the Blue Beetle, no?"
From: bluebeetle3 Date: November 29th, 2010 02:05 am (UTC) (Link)
"Um, Sometimes, my scarab and his are really similar. We have worked together a few times." Jaime said, looking at the positively gargauntuan man in front of him. "You're ... Bane, right?"
From: i_am_bane Date: November 29th, 2010 02:15 am (UTC) (Link)
"Si, yo soy Bane." Years ago he would have demonstrated pride and perhaps arrogance in announcing himself, but there was neither in Bane's tone now.

'How time changes things.' he mused to himself. Out loud he speaks to Jaime. "I encountered the Beetle some time ago. Afterwards, I found myself in my current..situation."

Bane sees a look of concern begin to appear on Scarab's face.

"Peace, joven. I hold no grudge against him. I have long since rid myself of a childish need for vengeance."

"We'll, that's good to know." Jaime said with a nod. "Well, I've been flying around, and things are bad, I mean really bad! There's something going on in the center of the city, near the Kubrik district. I don't know what though." He said, turning from Bane, to Robin, to Superboy, and back to Bane.

"Long story, in a nutshell: Darkseid controls roughly 75% of the city's population." Bane turns to Robin. "It's as Godfrey said, but if the effect becomes stronger the closer we get..how will we retain our free will?"

"Scarab, glad to have you with us. "
Robin's tone is about as business-like as the Bat, but there is a subtle suggestion of relief mixed in as well.

He sizes up the cobalt blue superhero and considers.

"Does that armor have any ability to screen out telepathic influence? Maybe something similar to a psi white noise generator? Darkseid is implementing some kind of conceptual mind control virus. It's communicated through perception but seems to have a power source component as well. We need to get under the Kubric district to disable the generator, but risk being overcome without some kind of defense."

"The suit's been filtering that stuff out from me, but I don't know if it can shield you guys too, I'll find out." Scarab replied. Holy crap, Robin was not only happy to see him but was asking for help. It's like Michael Jordan asking for help at basketball. No time for geeking out though. "Armor, is there anyway you could protect them, something like he said?" The suit responded with whistling and beeping, sounding almost R2D2 like. "It can, but only for a two-block radius, and I won't be able to make any energy constructs." Scarab says, "I can make the perimeter smaller, and have more combat ability, or give you guys free range, and be less powerful."
